3 Days on the Street – the Wind down

I’m going into the street this Wednesday. I am a bit nervous however looking forward to what I will discover while out there.

What I am hoping for is that I meet many individuals who live on or near the street – we call them homeless, and have the chance to hear their stories and share it with homeful folk – those who live in houses.

The goal of 3 Days in the Street is exactly that. The  four of  us who are going out there – Alvaro, Boris, Jackie and I, are vessels. We are hoping to fill our souls up with the narratives of men and women who will tell us about the time they fell in love; about the warehouse they used to manage; about their girl and boy whom they love so much but haven’t seen in many years.

Once we have heard about their lives, we will share our’s, and we will share yours, if you like. This process, orally passing our stories, will in of  itself create more of a balance in the world;  perhaps more of a just  world. If I know you, really know you through your story, then  I might be more apt to have deep eye contact with you when  I pass you on the street, as you sit  on a ledge or  curb, with a cup rolled out in front of you, filled half way with quarters, nickels and dimes.

Sit with us and be part of a very special moment in the history of Ve’ahavta; in the saga we call ‘Toronto’ and a time when thousands of people make our streets, our cul de sacs, our forests – their home.

Go to Ve’ahavta’s website at www.veahavta.org. Click on Upcoming Events, and then sponsor us. The money will be used to buy a new van for our Mobile Jewish REsponse to the Homeless. For every hour we’re out there – we can raise much needed cash to further  our efforts on the street. Please be part of it financially, through Tzedakah, charity.

Please be part of 3 Days on the Street by attending the Shabbat meal at the Minsk Shul (let us know), or the memorial for the Homeless. See your options on our site.

Time is winding down. I’m not sewing my name into my shirts, because I’ll only have one, but I am packing a back pack with a harmonica, and maybe my sleep apnea machine. We’ll see.

God bless all of us. We are all in this thing – life – together. Wish us luck. Join us. We are all creations of God. Let’s make our world better!
